What does “1099 income” mean?
“1099 income” is an informal phrase for payments that may be reported on an IRS Form 1099. A Form 1099 is an information return; receiving one—or not receiving one—does not by itself decide the tax treatment of every payment.
Common forms for independent work
Forms 1099-NEC and 1099-K can appear in freelance, contractor, marketplace, and payment-platform records. The correct form and reporting treatment depend on the payment and the taxpayer's circumstances.
Why records still matter
The IRS advises taxpayers to keep records that support income and expenses. Platform reports, invoices, receipts, deposit information, statements, fees, refunds, and adjustments can help reconcile a form with what actually happened.
