Mobile check deposit: how it works and what to watch.

Mobile check deposit (also called remote deposit capture) lets you deposit a paper check by photographing the front and back with your phone, through your bank or credit union's app, instead of visiting a branch or ATM.

How it works, step by step

  1. Endorse the check. Sign the back and add any restriction your bank requires (such as "for mobile deposit only").
  2. Open the deposit screen in your bank's app and select mobile deposit.
  3. Photograph the front and back clearly, on a dark, flat surface, with all four corners visible.
  4. Enter the amount exactly as written on the check.
  5. Confirm the deposit account and submit. Keep the paper check until the funds clear.

Hold times and availability

Funds are not always available immediately. Federal regulation and your bank's funds-availability policy govern when the deposit becomes spendable. Larger amounts, new accounts, and checks that the bank cannot verify immediately may be held longer. Your bank's deposit-account agreement states its holds policy.

Limits to know

Records to keep

Hold the paper check for the period your bank recommends (often 14–30 days) after the funds clear. Note the payer, date, amount, purpose, and the deposit confirmation. For a gig worker or freelancer, connecting each check to the underlying invoice or payment record matters at tax time — see the gig income tracker.

Where Kronos fits

Kronos organizes the income record behind each deposit — the payer, date, gross, fees, and net — so that deposited checks are tracked alongside other income. Whether check deposit is offered in the Kronos app depends on the partner bank and current account features; confirm availability in the app. KronosPay LLC is a financial technology company, not a bank. Read the bank-status page.

Primary sources

How long does a mobile deposit take to clear?

Availability depends on your bank's funds-availability policy and federal rules. Smaller deposits often clear in one to two business days; larger or unverifiable checks may be held longer.

Can I deposit the same check twice?

No. Depositing a check that has already cleared can be treated as fraud. Mark or void the paper check after it clears.
